Protecting the environment is at the very heart of En+’s green business model.

Our energy assets harness the power of water to generate renewable energy while our metals business is one of the world’s top two most environmentally friendly aluminium producers based on CO2 emissions per tonne. In all our operations, we aim to prevent, mitigate and remediate the environmental impacts of our activities. We work closely with all stakeholders to manage and improve our environmental footprint.

The Group’s companies structure their production activity in accordance with allowances for harmful emissions and wastewater discharge, limits on allowances for industrial waste and consumption, as well as licences obtained for subsoil and surface water use, and for hazardous waste management activity.

Reduction in GHG emissions targets

Asset modernisation

En+ Group has so far invested more than $600 million in eco-friendly upgrades of its existing assets. We have been able to substantially reduce our environmental impact in recent years through the use of state-of-the-art gas treatment technologies, closed water cycle systems, power efficiency-raising schemes, implementation of environmental management systems and waste treatment programmes.

For example, the growing demand for electricity in Siberia projected for the next 5 years is met by the existing capacities of the Group's companies. In relation to this, En+ plans to focus on investments in replacing and repairing existing equipment to increase its productivity and environmental efficiency. In particular, 12 hydraulic units were modernised and a project to replace impellers was initiated at Krasnoyarsk HPP. Alongside with that, impellers are being replaced at Bratsk HPP and Ust-Ilimsk HPP, while preparation is underway at Irkutsk HPP to modernise its hydraulic units, with an increase in installed capacity.

1.5 billion kWh – is the increase in electricity production following modernisation at Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, Ust-Ilimsk and Irkutsk HPPs using the same amount of water.

UC RUSAL is also actively undertaking the modernisation of equipment by developing and introducing new technologies. The company's strategic goal is to become the most efficient and eco-friendly aluminium producer in the world. In order to achieve this, UC RUSAL invests in developing its own engineering and technology base, developing innovative technologies and products, and modernising production facilities. Investments allow the company to increase the volume of its value-added products, increase the quality of its output, reduce energy-intensive production, and increase environmental safety. One such project was the introduction of extremely powerful RA-500 reduction cells aimed at reducing the energy intensity of aluminium production. The technology will be implemented mainly at the Sayanogorsk and Krasnoyarsk smelters.

  • 10-15% (12 kWh/kg) – the reduction in electricity consumption of the RA-500 compared to previous generations of reduction cell.
  • C.50% – the increase in aluminium output compared to RA-300.

Protection of water resources

The protection of water resources is one or key priorities. Across the Group’s companies we are undertaking a wide range of measures aimed at preventing water pollution and encouraging rational use of water resources by thermal power stations. In particular, an environmental monitoring system has been set up at JSC Irkutskenergo to assess the current state of the water, air and soil in the area that is affected by the company's production facilities, and analyse the dynamics, trends, interconnections and possible reasons for any changes.

One of UC RUSAL's strategic aims is to create a closed water supply system at production facilities, which will reduce the need to use water resources and reduce the amount of wastewater discharged.

At Boksitogorsk Alumina Refinery in particular, the level of discharge has halved over the past seven years. At present, preparations are underway for a project to create a closed-loop water supply system at the refinery, and work is being done to eliminate loss of water for everyday use at production facilities. This will reduce water use by 20%.

  • 3 mln m3 – expected reduction in industrial water use at Boksitogorsk Alumina Refinery.

Reduction in air pollution

A central component of En+ Group’s commitment to protecting the environment lies in its efforts to reduce air pollution. The company regularly monitors emissions from its production facilities, and also implements dust control measures. As a result of these efforts we have seen nitrogen dioxide emissions reduce steadily.

UC RUSAL

In 2016, UC RUSAL continued its work on modernising its gas cleaning systems (GCS) and basic equipment at its production facilities, including the transition to Eco-Soderberg technology. Developed by company specialists, this technology improves the design of the reduction cells, which improves their hermetic seal. Implementation of the project continued at Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, Irkutsk and Novokuznetsk Aluminium Smelters.

Targets for 2025

  • 15 % — reduction in direct emissions from aluminium production compared to 2014;
  • 10 % — reduction in direct emissions from alumina production compared to 2014;
